Goin' South isn't actually as Southern as its title or marketing suggest; while most of the songs here are pretty compatible musically, only about half of them fall under strict definitions of Southern rock. That said, there really isn't much here that Southern rock fans won't enjoy -- most of it is informed by country and/or blues, and boogies just as hard as the true Southern rock cuts.

But Young's song also portended the bashing pre-grunge style for which he would become known on and off during his career with Crazy Horse. Nils Lofgren's persistent banging of the piano keys and Young's frantic guitar are the elements that send "Southern Man" into the rock & roll stratosphere, particularly during its long middle break and fade.

In the North, in the south and everywhere. this offends people from the south, however, like a previous poster said, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Neil Young were friends, and Skynyrd, led by Van Zant, wrote many progressive songs for southern rock of their time, things like "that smell", and Saturday Night Special werent examples of Skynyrd getting up on.
